How to best clear out your garage

Are you longing to sort your garage space out so you can use the room for something else. Perhaps a games room or a home gym? Or do you desperately need to get a Garage door Repair Barnet company in to fix a new door for you, but you can’t get to it because of all of the items that have accumulated in there over the years? Well, now might be a great time to have a good clearout and here are some handy tips to help you.

Planning – make sure that you give yourself enough time to have a good clear out of your garage and get any rubbish bags or skips that you might need planned in .You will also need to consider whether you need any additional storage boxes or bags and get those in ready.

Sorting – take all of the items in your garage and place them in a giant pile in the middle of the room. This way you can then sort your storage options out and place them around the edges of the garage. It also means you can give that area a good clean and check for any evidence of damp.

Organising – work through each of your items one by and one and figure out whether you need to keep it or not. If you are throwing it out in either a black bag or straight in the tip, you may also have a pile of items that you are later going to donate to charity. Any items that you are going to keep should be placed neatly in or on your storage items of choice.

Taking the clearout into the house

Once the garage is done, late autumn is a good time to carry on through the home and garden before winter and Christmas arrive. Over a year most households build up a surprising amount of stuff, from unwanted gifts to dead plants that need removing.

Timing matters. Avoid starting the day before a big family gathering or dinner party, and give yourself enough time to go through everything properly. For a large clearout, it can help to have a skip on the driveway ready to take the rubbish.

Work one room at a time. Take everything off the shelves and out of the drawers and put it in one place in the middle of the room. That lets you wipe down the furniture and storage, then go through the pile logically, putting back what you want to keep. Make one pile for donations and another for the tip, then move on to the next room and repeat.

Sorting a garage section by section

Before starting, have a plan and somewhere for the rubbish to go, either a skip on the driveway or an empty car ready for trips to the tip. Divide the garage into sections and tackle one at a time so the job stays manageable.

Take everything out of the first section and spread it on the driveway. Anything you plan to get rid of should go straight into the skip or car, before you talk yourself into keeping it. Put items with sentimental value to one side to look through later.

What remains is the pile you are unsure about. Some of it can go to charity, and some can be repurposed, for example an old wooden bed frame could be turned into garden furniture. If you hire a skip, check what you are allowed to put in it, as some companies cannot take mixed garden and household waste.
