Should Vaccine Studies include Care Homes?

Care homes provide a safe space for people to reside, when they require additional support with personal care and daily living.

Developing vaccines takes deep scientific knowledge and expertise. Once a vaccine has been developed and confirmed to be safe, vaccine studies help to collect invaluable data on its efficacy.

Vaccine Trials

Those living in care homes are prioritised to receive vaccines when they are made available. This is because they are thought to be more at risk, due to their nature of their part-communal living arrangements, as well as their susceptibility to infections due to age and/or pre-existing medical conditions.

Despite this, care home residents are currently excluded from vaccine clinical trials, meaning that they are not adequately represented in safety data, nor are their voices heard.

Taking part in vaccine studies can save lives. If these were to be rolled out across care homes, it would help to provide important information on the immune responses of older adults. This would help to aid in the improvement of vaccines, which may be less effective in those who are living communally, or who have frailty, dementia, or other health conditions.

Care Assistant Jobs

Care assistants who are trustworthy, safe, great at communicating, and who can show empathy and understanding, are fundamental to care.

If you are interested in supporting people, and can demonstrate the above skills, then a role in care work could be perfect for you.
