Here are five tips to make sure your home is safe from fire:

  1. Check that your smoke alarm is working and if it isn’t, get a new one installed as soon as possible. You should be able to have this done for you during the fire risk assessment.
  2. Make sure your cigarettes have gone out fully before you dispose of them, and be careful where you leave them. Apparently, every six days someone dies from a fire caused by a cigarette, so take caution if you are a smoker.
  3. Remember to turn off electric heaters and to not cover them. About two fires a day are started by heaters. If left on too long unattended, they can over heat, burn and catch on fire. The fire can spread extremely quickly. Plus, if there is plastic on your heater, this will burn and melt, causing toxic fumes to enter the air.

  1. Check that your electrical appliances are not faulty. Faulty electrics cause around 6,000 fires every year. This can be overloaded sockets or broken appliances and wiring, so be careful and don’t risk it.

Hopefully these tips will help you make your house as safe as possible from fire. It is important to protect yourself and your family by taking this advice.
