Free Macrame Patterns to Try

When you create macrame projects, you are participating in a craft with ancient roots. Even the Babylonians made artistic works using simple rope twisted into knots. Today, there are countless macrame patterns to allow you to practice this simple yet rewarding craft.

What is macrame?

Macrame is a textile art, but unlike knitting or crochet, it does not require needles or hooks. All you require are cords, which could be made of twine, hemp, linen or leather. Chunky yarn, such as Wool Couture chunky yarn, is a popular choice.

You create your piece by tying a series of knots, usually reef knots and half hitches. Sometimes, beads, shells or other decorative objects will be added, particularly for macrame jewellery. Other equipment, such as tape measures or scissors, may be useful.

What can you make with macrame?

Many children’s friendship bracelets are made using macrame, an indicator of how simple this craft can be.

Coasters are another common beginner project:

Take one 150cm/60 inch cord, plus five 81cm/32 inch cords. Create a loop with one end of the long cord, then attach the shorter cords using lark’s head knots. You can then use double half hitch knots to start twisting it all together. It will probably take six or seven rounds to make a coaster, but you can size it to your preference. Then you can brush, trim and add any finishing touches. A small dab of superglue can hold it all in place.

Other fairly basic macrame projects for which you can easily find patterns with a quick internet search include baskets, towel holders, plant holders (instead of regular pots), keyrings, bags and even shelves. You can then move on to larger and more complex projects such as wall hangings and curtains. If you have leftover cords, you could make a smaller, artistic piece such as a macrame feather.

These are just a few of the possibilities if you want to create your own macrame projects. There are many more options. It may be a relatively simple craft compared to knitting or crochet, but it is still full of possibilities.
