Are You A Process or Product Knitter?

When it comes to knitting, you’ll find two different personalities. One has great focus and determination on the project, which is a very nice cardigan using high-quality cashmere. They plan months in advance for the perfect gift for a loved one. They love knitting and cannot wait to see it finished because it will look really good.

The next knitter has great focus but isn’t planning anything special for the future. They are knitting a simple grey garter-stitch scarf, although it’s almost a blanket now, that they started several months ago. They don’t even know who to give it to; whoever wants it! When will it get finished? Maybe sometime soon, maybe sometime never. They really enjoy knitting so much that they often just knit. Are you a product knitter or a process knitter? The term product knitter is given to someone who knits for the end product. These are normally the knitters who knit to give gifts or make things for themselves or a business. This is their drive – seeing what they’ve worked hard on. They get some satisfaction from the product but also satisfaction from knitting the last stitch. They will do almost whatever it takes to make sure the end result is perfect. Their personality requires them to have a perfect end result, because if it is imperfect, they must tear it all out, just to ensure it is correct.

The term process knitter is given to a person who finds calmness while knitting. These people love knitting, not only for the finished product but for knitting itself. The actual moving of your needles with your hands and making row after row could almost be considered hypnotic to most process knitters. They really enjoy every single stitch; it’s almost like meditation. Most process knitters love knitting because it calms their amygdala (which monitors all emotions), slows down the heart rate, decreases cortisol levels and brings down blood pressure.

Although the majority are process knitters because it relaxes them, not everyone fits into this category. While knitting is calming for most, others simply love knitting and want nothing more but to continue knitting the rest of their life. These knitters won’t mind if it turns out wobbly or misshaped. They will knit as much or as little as needed. They felt the soothing effect the whole time that they knit. Now it is ready to be finished and they can move on to their next fifty-hour adventure in knitting.
