What is a Notary Public?
Notary Public is the oldest part of the legal profession in England and Wales, originally appointed under Papal authority by the Archbishop of Canterbury. Now they are appointed by the Archbishop’s Faculty Office and regulated by the Master of that authority. There are fewer than 800 members of the profession currently practising, with many notary services in London.
Their main role is to confirm the authenticity of documents to be used overseas and in foreign jurisdictions. These can include birth certificates and academic qualifications for use abroad if individuals are marrying or looking for work.
Once a document is attested by the notary, most foreign courts and authorities will accept it without going through the process of making further checks.
What tasks do they undertake?
Notaries carry out the following tasks:
. Authenticate powers of attorney for overseas use. . Handle property dealings abroad . Authenticate wills executed overseas and produce documents to help deal with estate administration where individuals have died overseas or own property abroad. . Authenticate personal documents relating to emigration, or marriage and work applications abroad. . Authenticate company and business documents.
